Our Programs Build Caring, Confident Youth and Future Leaders

Camp Sealth is a Puget Sound landmark on Vashon Island. Campgrounds encompass over 400 acres of pristine forest and marine wilderness, including a mile and a half of beachfront. In 2009, 1,524 youth continued the 89th year of our treasured Camp Sealth tradition. In addition to the young campers, 22 high school interns volunteered for 3,480 hours to assist with the program. Camp Sealth also hosted 3,749 individuals for leadership retreats and other recreational activities throughout the remainder of the year.

Camp Niwana is home to weekend camping events, a summer day camp, and is rented by numerous churches and non-profit organizations for camps and retreats. Located near Port Orchard on 130 acres with a private lake, Niwana was used by 796 persons in 2009.

Environmental Education provides many public and private schools in the Puget Sound area with an experiential learning program customized to meet each group’s unique needs. Our residential Environmental Education programs are held at Camp Sealth, and range from two to five days. Classes focus on basic science and ecology, raising a student’s awareness of human impact on the natural world. In 2009, 1,410 students and teachers participated in our Environmental Education programs.

Day Camps are week-long summer programs for children entering K - 8 grade. In 2009, our Day Camps operated in ten convenient locations around the Puget Sound area. Day Camps were staffed by 243 dedicated adult volunteers and 454 junior staff. The junior staff gave a total of 21,792 hours of service. 1,097 kids participated in these Day Camps, for a total of 1,551 youth. An additional 121 kids participated in the eight sessions of Day Camp held at Camp Sealth.

Group Program has been the foundation of Camp Fire for a century. Small groups, led by adult volunteer teams, meet regularly in schools and neighborhoods to develop friendships, have fun, and learn new skills. Groups may be all girls, all boys, or co-ed. Some groups called Community Family Clubs meet and do activities with the entire family. In 2009, 1,330 youth participated in Camp Fire’s signature Group Programs. In 2009, members of this program sold 3,487 boxes of candy to generous donors to send to the families of deployed members of the Armed services.

Babysitting Classes give youth skills in caring for children, healthy habits, handling stress, and safety.
88 youth participated in Babysitting Classes in 2009.

Licensed Child Care is provided at two elementary schools in Seattle for children ages 3-12. These sites provide year-round care including ten weeks of fun in the summer. In 2009, 34 children participated in our Child Care programs.

Special Sitters help mainstream youth participants with disabilities at Day Camps, Camp Sealth, Saturday Club, and other council events and activities. In 2009, 24 Special Sitters helped guarantee that all Camp Fire USA programs were available to people regardless of mental or physical disabilities.

Saturday Club is a recreational program for children with disabilities and their siblings. Saturday Club gives parents five hours of respite from their parenting responsibilities. In 2009, 60 children representing 34 families attended one of our five program sites throughout King and Kitsap Counties. Special Family Weekend, held over Memorial Day weekend, engaged 45 youth, 54 adults, and 25 volunteers this year.

Youth Volunteer Corps provides service-learning project opportunities for middle and high school youth. In 2009, giving a total of 3,851 hours of service to the community, 339 teens were involved in 62 projects with YVC throughout King County.
